Diet on braces - what can and cannot be eaten
What to eat with braces?
If you want to achieve your dream of a beautiful smile, you need to be patient and accept the various limitations associated with wearing braces. Some of them relate to the diet, which must be changed accordingly during treatment. The changes in the menu are aimed at avoiding situations such as bracket separation, arch distortion or caries development, which can prolong the treatment time. Thanks to these changes, it is possible to limit the number of visits to the orthodontist to control visits, as a rule, once a month.
Difficult beginnings
In the first few days after installation of Dnipro braces, the patient feels pain, as well as after each re-examination. This is quite normal, but not very convenient. The pain makes it difficult to chew food, causing many fears. Doubts arise about what to eat and what to avoid. One thing can be said for sure: you need to get used to wearing braces and eating with them. Over time, the patient becomes more adept at biting and can expand his menu.
What to eat when the teeth hurt?
People who decide to wear braces are afraid of a drastic change in eating habits. As it turned out, not at all. Even at the initial stage of treatment, you can eat a variety of foods, but not in the same way as before. When the teeth hurt, which usually lasts two to three days after the braces are inserted or activated at the next visit, biting is not allowed. Therefore, not very hot dishes, chopped with a blender, are suitable. In this way, you can prepare:
- delicious tomato, pumpkin or spinach cream soups,
- vegetable pastes.
- mashed potatoes and other vegetables
- soft meatballs from fish or poultry
In addition, it is worth paying attention to mixed milk soups with the addition of products rich in valuable nutrients, such as oatmeal, millet or rice. A good addition to the menu is: cheese, natural yogurts with fresh fruit mousse, milk drinks rich in probiotics (buttermilk and kefir).
What foods should be avoided during orthodontic treatment?
When the toothache subsides, it's time to expand the diet with foods that require chewing. Most patients who wear braces eventually learn to eat in them. However, this does not mean that they can eat all foods. In the interests of both the condition of braces and healthy teeth, some foods should be avoided, and others should be limited in consumption. They include:
Sweets and all sugary products
People with braces on their teeth should do everything to prevent the development of caries. Limiting sweets, chips and sugary drinks, and brushing and flossing after each meal serves this purpose. Also among sweets, but not only, there are many chewing products, the use of which, in addition to caries, also threatens to damage braces. Chewing fudge, toffee or caramel, as well as chewing candies stick not only to the teeth, but also to the braces, sometimes causing them to peel off or even loosen the rings, as in the case of chewing gum.
Solid products
Nuts, pumpkin or sunflower seeds, as well as crackers or some types of bread require thorough chewing. Their consumption leads not only to peeling of locks or rings, but also to distortion of the arches of braces, which deepens the wrong bite, rather than treating it. To prevent such accidents, you should finely chop hard products, and grind the seeds in a meat grinder.
Colored products
In many people who wear braces, natural food dyes discolor the ligatures (the elastics that fix the arch to the braces) and other elements of the braces fade. During the treatment, you should limit smoking, drinking coffee, tea, red wine and cola, the ingredients of which also dissolve the glue that fastens the braces to the teeth. Blueberries, black currants, red beets, red peppers and dishes with their participation also belong to strongly coloring products.
With or without braces, a healthy and varied diet is always recommended, and breaking the rules can result in having to wear braces for longer.
