All about quality dental implants
Installing implants is one of the most popular and truly effective methods of restoring a partially or completely damaged tooth. They are much more reliable and durable compared to dentures. All thanks to the use of modern technology, which turns an implant with a crown into a full-fledged tooth replacement with all its external and functional features.
What do you need to know about really high-quality implants and the procedure for installing them? We have prepared the most common questions from patients and answers to them.
What is a dental implant?
The first and perhaps the most important question that interests many patients. This term means nothing more than a kind of replacement of the tooth root. That is, it is not the tooth itself (a crown is installed in its place), but a removed root that is implanted into the bone.
This procedure allows you to get a more durable result compared to installing dental bridges or dentures. The implant fully preserves the chewing potential of the tooth and also prevents the destruction of neighboring teeth - it does not grind them down or increase the load on them.
What determines the service life of a dental implant?
How long dental implants last will be influenced by the material and technology of production and installation of the artificial tooth. The most affordable implants last no more than 10 years. While premium ones can maintain their integrity for up to 20 years.
On average, a good dental implant will last about 12-15 years, after which doctors recommend replacement.
How is dental implantation performed?
If you still decide to have the procedure and have received the dentist’s approval, the further process looks like this:
- Examination of the patient and analysis of the oral cavity: examination of the bone tissue of the tooth, drawing up a treatment plan.
- Determination of the final cost.
- Implant installation. It is performed under local anesthesia and lasts up to 20 minutes.
- Removing stitches. They may automatically dissolve or be removed in the dentist's office 10-12 days after the procedure.
- Recovery – the implant needs to take root, this usually takes 3-4 months. After which the tooth crown is made and fixed.
Are there any contraindications to the procedure?
Installing an implant is considered a universal and fairly common method of restoring a damaged tooth. However, can all patients undergo such a procedure and who should not receive dental implants? Among the main contraindications:
- blood disease;
- the presence of a number of chronic, including autoimmune diseases: tuberculosis, rheumatic disease, diabetes mellitus;
- disruption of the circulatory system, including anemia;
- diseases of the cardiovascular system;
- the presence of a cyst or tartar in the oral cavity, as well as gum disease in the acute stage: periodontal disease, periodontitis.
How to choose a quality implant?
Obviously, not all implants are truly effective and useful. You can read a lot, including scientific articles, about the characteristics of products from different manufacturers. However, the choice of this or that implant should be entrusted exclusively to a doctor.
Therefore, look for a qualified, experienced dentist who uses certified, reliable implants in his practice. The doctor also makes a choice in favor of one or another system and installation method, based on clinical indications and the characteristics of your oral cavity.
